On April 29, 1992, Denny, a construction truck driver, was driving his red dump truck through the intersection of Florence and Normandie avenues in South Central Los Angeles when he was pulled from his vehicle by a group of rioters. The riots erupted following the acquittal of four Los Angeles Police Department officers in the beating of Rodney King, a Black motorist, which had heightened racial tensions in the city.
What Happened During the Attack:
• The Incident: Denny was stopped at the intersection when rioters, including a group later known as the “L.A. Four” (Damian Williams, Henry Watson, Antoine Miller, and Gary Williams), targeted him because he was white. They threw rocks at his truck, forced him to stop, and dragged him from the cab. He was beaten with fists, kicked, and struck with objects, including a cinder block to the head by Damian Williams, which fractured his skull in 91 places. The attack was captured live on video by a news helicopter and broadcast nationally, becoming one of the defining images of the riots.
• Rescue: Four Black residents—Bobby Green, Titus Murphy, Terri Barnett, and Lei Yuille—witnessed the attack on live television and risked their lives to intervene. They placed Denny back in his truck and drove him to Daniel Freeman Memorial Hospital, saving his life. Denny was coughing up blood and likely would have died without their help.
Aftermath and Injuries:
• Injuries: Denny sustained severe injuries, including a fractured skull, brain damage, and impairments to his speech and ability to walk. He underwent years of rehabilitative therapy to recover.
• Legal Outcome: The attackers faced varying consequences:
• Damian Williams was convicted of four misdemeanors and simple mayhem, avoiding attempted murder charges, and was released early in 1997. He later received a 46-years-to-life sentence in 2003 for a separate murder.
• Henry Watson was convicted of a single misdemeanor assault charge and received three years’ probation.
• Antoine Miller pleaded guilty to assault and theft (stealing papers from Denny’s truck) and was sentenced to 27 months’ probation. He was killed in 2004 during an altercation.
• Gary Williams, who stole Denny’s wallet, also faced lesser charges.
